Stage 03 Roof types & materials

FORTIFIED Roofing

FORTIFIED is a published construction standard for roofs in hurricane country — a sealed roof deck, ring-shank nailing and locked-down edges — and a roof only carries the designation once an independent evaluator, not the contractor who built it, has signed it off.

Straight about this job

What you get

A published standard, not a slogan

FORTIFIED is written and maintained by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. The designation is awarded on an independent evaluator's inspection, which is the entire reason it means anything — the roofer does not get to grant it.

Ask your carrier, not your roofer

Some Gulf-state insurers and some grant programmes treat a designated roof differently from a standard one. What that is worth on your particular policy is between you and your agent. We will not put a figure on it, and nobody who quotes you one can know it.

The sealed deck difference

Even where extreme wind strips the covering, a sealed deck keeps most of the water out of the structure. That is the difference between drying out a roof and drying out a house.

Straight answers

FORTIFIED Roofing — the questions we get

How much more does building to the standard cost?

A modest premium over a standard replacement — largely sealed-deck materials, better fasteners, and the evaluator's fee. We price it as its own line on the scope so you can see exactly what the standard costs and decide with the number in front of you.

Do I need a full replacement to build to it?

Yes — the standard concerns the deck and the edges, so it is applied at replacement time. If your roof is near the end of its life, that is the window where the upgrade is cheapest to make.

Who awards the designation?

An independent evaluator engaged for that purpose, working to the IBHS standard. We build the roof to the specification and provide the documentation the evaluation requires; the decision itself is not ours, and we never state it in advance.
